The central hub of the city, named from the Albanian hero Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg – Albania’s National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg, is Albania’s most revered historical figure. He led an independent Albanian state for 25 years, resisting Ottoman rule. His legacy preserved Albanian identity through 500 years of occupation and is honored as a defender of both Albania and Europe. His statue in Skanderbeg Square was inaugurated in 1968, marking 500 years since his death.
