Tirana, the capital city of Albania, lies at the foot of Mount Dajti and has over 919,000 residents. Inhabited since the Neolithic era, its name derives from the ancient castle Tirkan. Modern Tirana was founded in 1614 by Ottoman governor Sulejman Bargjini and became Albania’s capital in 1920. Today, it is the political, cultural, and economic heart of the country.
