Lake Shkodra (Liqeni i Shkodrës) is the largest lake in the Balkans, shared between Albania (1/3) and Montenegro (2/3). It lies in a karstic depression with variable depth (6–60 m) and surface area (370–450 km²), depending on the season.
The lake is a biodiversity hotspot, home to:
- 50 fish species (18 endemic),
- 50 freshwater snail species (many endemic),
- Over 270 bird species, making it one of Europe’s top bird reserves.
Birdwatchers can spot migrating birds, Dalmatian pelicans, egrets, cormorants, and more—often described as a “bird safari.” The Montenegrin side is a national park, and CNN has highlighted the lake for its natural beauty.
Lake Shkodra also offers:
- Water sports & boat tours
- Cycling & walking trails
- Visits to ancient monasteries and fortresses (e.g., Grmozur)
- Delicious local fish cuisine in lakeside restaurants
It’s a perfect destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
