The Castel of Gjirokastra

Overview

The castle is situated at the top of the hill and is visible from every point of the old town. It is the second largest castle in the entire Balkan peninsula and the largest building of the historic centre of Argirocastro, dating back to the 4th century BC. From the fortress overlooking the plain below, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city and the valley. Inside is the Museum of Weapons, where are stored cannons of the World War II, traditional weapons that span a long historical period and an American aircraft shot down during the communist regime. The castle is also home to the National Folklore Festival, one of the most important cultural events in Albania. In the castle is the prison which is located in the first gallery of the weapons museum. Completed in 1932, the prison was used during the regime of King Zog, by the Italian and German occupation forces, and finally by the communist regime. The only part of the prison accessible to visitors was developed as a museum by the communist regime in the 1970s. The American airplane, are the remains of a T33 aircraft of the United States Air Force. The plane was forced to land at Rinas airport in December 1957 due to technical problems.
